The Royal Ballet School is one of the world’s greatest centres of classical ballet training, which for generations has produced exceptional dancers and choreographers. To attract and sustain the best young talent regardless of family circumstances, we aim to provide assistance towards key costs.

    Situation

Admission to the School is based on talent and potential, regardless of financial means. Approximately 90% of all students rely on financial assistance to attend. Additional expenses of around £1,500 per annum per student for key items (uniform, ballet shoes, music, singing lessons and travel to and from home) are not included in the government grant, which supports fees and boarding costs. When a family faces furlough, redundancy, illness or separation, these costs can become unmanageable.

    Solution

The School fundraises to offer means-tested hardship bursaries to help families meet these additional costs when they face financial difficulty for whatever reason and where it will make a measurable difference; such as assisting with the costs of travel, ballet shoes or uniform. Most hardship bursaries are approximately £500 each and benefit around 30% of students each year, although families can apply more than once a year if necessary.
