    Situation

Bereaved families struggling with the death of their baby are facing uniquely harsh challenges due to COVID-19, putting their mental health at further risk. Around 5,000 babies die annually in the UK. At the same time, our front-line NHS staff working in hospitals are under unimaginable pressure supporting bereaved families at the worst moment in their lives, in the very best way they can. People affected by the death of a baby and NHS staff need the support of Sands more than ever.

    Solution

We are: 1. Increasing capacity on our free helpline for both parents and NHS staff 2. Migrating bereavement support online to replace face-to-face meetings 3. Providing NHS staff with practical and emotional support, and information 4. Promoting safer pregnancy messaging to help save babies' lives 5. Supporting research into impact of COVID19 on pregnancy and baby death
