    Situation

Only half the children in Zambia who start primary school go on to complete high school. And only half of those are awarded their high school certificate. Of those, some do exceptionally well, but have to wait at least two years before knowing if they will be offered the loan they need and a place at a Zambian university where the teaching quality is frequently poor. During the two years, many girls become pregnant and boys resort to drinking and drugs. The cycle of poverty continues.

    Solution

We run a one year, full time, residential gap year programme that develops the skills, knowledge and dispositions in our students. It is designed along four cornerstones: • Academic development including critical reading, writing, SATs, SAT subject tests, and a research essay • Social consciousness through tutoring young children and project work • Emotional and physical wellbeing, helped by alumni and qualified psychotherapists • Creative – gardening, art and cultural pursuits.
