    Situation

In London, one of the wealthiest cities in the world, 700,000 children in London live in poverty, that’s 37%, after housing costs are taken into account. Research from the Mayors’ office found that 1 in 6 children in London experience food insecurity. Food is a basic requirement for healthy development, these children, will, on average, develop slower than contemporaries, do less well at school, have poorer physical and mental health, and will have fewer opportunities in their later lives than their peers.

    Solution

In London, 9 million meals are missed due to poverty, at the same time 13m meals are sent to landfill. City Harvest collects surplus food from the food sector and redistributes it to 340 frontline community groups that support vulnerable people across London. This Christmas City Harvest will focus on feeding children facing hunger by redistributing food to provide 200,000 meals to children and their families this Christmas.
