A meadow in midsummer is one of our most iconic wildlife spectacles. Our richest habitat for wild flowers, these crucibles of biodiversity support a wealth of wildlife. Plantlife will transform their fortunes by empowering individuals and communities to create and look after their own meadows.

    Situation

97% of our meadows have been lost: species-rich grassland now covers only 1% of the UK but this unparalleled plant diversity provides vital life support for declining invertebrates, birds and mammals. A fifth of all priority species for conservation action are associated with grasslands. With the loss of meadows comes a loss in understanding and experience of meadows; a direct connection with an ancient cultural landscape that stores carbon, purifies water and quite simply, gives joy.

    Solution

Meadow Makers: creating meadows with farmers, parish and town councils, schools, housing estates and churchyards and establishing local meadows groups. Meadows Academy: whether young or experienced, professional or amateur, our Meadow Academicians will be the grassland wildlife recorders, seed collectors and meadow makers of the future. My Meadow: working with healthcare professionals, artists and communities, we will offer diverse audiences the chance to experience meadows to aid wellbeing.
