Over 70% of women in Ethiopia give birth without a doctor or nurse present due to poverty and lack of access to health services and this has a devastating impact - with an estimated 1,500 women developing an obstetric fistula each year. Fistula is a medical condition that affects women following prolonged obstructed childbirth with no medical care and results in severe incontinence that can lead to infections, ulcerations and paralysis caused by nerve damage, as well as community ostracization.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) operates six Fistula Hospitals across Ethiopia: in Addis Ababa and in five provinces where health services are very limited. These hospitals are providing vital services to women living in remote rural communities to prevent and treat childbirth injuries. In 2020/21 HFE will provide free surgeries to over 2,000 women to treat conditions including fistula, pelvic organ prolapse, caesarean sections for past fistula patients and minor procedures including cystoscopy.
