"You really helped a lot with your advice and just by being there to listen to me. You have no idea how much that meant to me."
"I feel much better for having spoken to you. It has taken a weight off my mind, and just talking things through has reduced my stress."
" I am a legal professional, I contacted your helpline this weekend and I was absolutely blown away by how much your adviser helped me. My partner could not understand the anxiety I was feeling but your adviser understood immediately, having been a legal professional."
"One of LawCare's peer supporters helped me earlier in the year and I am now back on track thanks to her. I am doing well and billing and pressure has come away from me. I am also not drinking, she was amazing. Thank you so much, keep up the good work, you saved me!"
Life in the law can be tough. Very long working hours, competitive environment, managing client expectations, alongside personality traits such as perfectionism and self criticism, create a culture which can lead to poor mental health. Lawyers are known to have higher rates of stress, anxiety and depression than the national average. The Covid-19 crisis has exacerbated these issues. Over 40% of our support contacts are pandemic-related.
LawCare is a charity that provides emotional support, information and training to the legal community. We promote good mental health and wellbeing in legal workplaces and drive change in education, training and practice. We're undertaking research about contributory factors to poor mental health in the legal professions, so we can identify the practical steps needed for lasting change. Mentally healthy lawyers benefits not just the individuals affected but the administration of justice too.
