Royal SpringBoard is the UK’s largest bursary charity. We work to increase social mobility and transform the lives of children and young people from disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds. This is achieved by harnessing the power of 110% bursaries at boarding and independent day schools.

    Situation

Before COVID19, young people from disadvantaged areas were already facing declining mobility: falling real wages, fewer opportunities, declining living standards. COVID has made this even worse. Many of the 410 young people we currently support to attend boarding school have lost family members to COVID19. Many were young carers even before the crisis, and more so now. All are anxious about their futures. We know that boarding school placements provide a tangible way to offer a brighter future.

    Solution

By providing life transforming 110% bursaries at some of the UK’s leading boarding schools we aim to develop confident, independent, positive and well-rounded young people ready to fulfil their aspirations for university, apprenticeship placements and the workplace beyond. ‘SpringBoarders’ are encouraged to act as role models, who influence and motivate peers in their home communities and thereby increasing social mobility. Our research shows that each pupil influences at least 20 others.
