Each year, 8 children in every class will leave primary school unable to read well. This year, with children missing months of school, it will be worse. And these children often struggle in school, and beyond. You can change that by helping children to read in 50 schools across London.

    Situation

Every year, 8 children in every class in London leave primary school unable to read well. This year, with children missing months of school, it will be worse. They will struggle in school and beyond. Because reading isn't just about books. It’s about reading a road sign, a safety manual, a birthday card. It’s understanding a job application and the prescription that could save your life. Poor literacy leads to limited job prospects, poor health, low self-esteem and reduced life expectancy.

    Solution

When a child can navigate words, they can navigate the world. That’s why we’re helping children develop the reading skills they need to succeed by creating flexible, local volunteering. Our app matches schools with safeguarded, vetted, trained reading volunteers at the tap of a button. Each volunteer delivers one-to-one reading sessions for a six-week programme with a child at risk of not reading well. 3 in 4 children supported so far are Pupil Premium/English as an Additional Language.
