EEF aim to help significantly more promising youngsters by expanding our programme into the Gambella region of Ethiopia, where poverty and very limited education facilities prevent most from pursuing their goals and achieving their potential. We are looking for co-funding for phase1 of the programme

    Situation

Gambella is one of the most deprived areas in Ethiopia, next to the border with South Sudan with a population of 820,000. More than 50% of these people are refugees from South Sudan (fleeing the Civil War, which began in 2013). 65% of the refugees are below the age of 18 and education support in the region is incredibly poor. This poor rural area has very limited facilities to educate this large youth population.

    Solution

We have vetted partner schools in Gambella over the last four years and five students from Gambella have already successfully joined the EEF programme in Addis Ababa between 2014 and 2018. One of them has been granted a full scholarship at NYU and another is now studying medicine in Ethiopia. From 2020 we will support students in Gambella in a similar way to our successful Addis Ababa programme. Scholars will be provided with school materials, food, safe shelter and all necessary materials.
