Situation
For many years, Lambeth has suffered one of the highest rates of serious youth violence in London. We see every day how this blights the whole community. It kills and injures young people and destroys families, mental wellbeing and quality of life for the whole community. We also see the inequalities that lead young people to choose a life of violence. As we’ve supported the community this year, we’ve seen how the pandemic has only accentuated these. At the same time, the Black Lives Matter movement has shone a fresh spotlight on the injustices that many people in Lambeth live through every day.
Solution
It doesn’t have to be this way. We know change is possible. We’ve seen it happen! We will partner with families and young people across three major estates; students at risk of exclusion in Lambeth secondary schools; and families struggling as a result of the pandemic. We will listen carefully to understand their frustrations. We’ll help them identify the issues they care about and empower them to make change happen. As they begin to channel anger into positive action and as opposing groups come together, we will tackle the causes of violence and build a more peaceful future together.
