We will give rural households in Kenya and Uganda the chance to plan their family. Nearly half of pregnancies are unintended, leading to unplanned births, unsafe abortion and high maternal mortality. We will provide advice and contraception to vulnerable women so that they can make informed choices.

    Situation

In Kenya and Uganda, many families have more children than they want or can afford. This puts pressure on household resources often resulting in low school attendance, thus perpetuating a cycle of poverty. Sometimes the only option is to seek an unskilled abortion, a leading cause of maternal mortality in Kenya and Uganda and often causing permanent bodily damage. There are many barriers preventing access to family planning: distance to services, misinformation, poverty and cultural beliefs.

    Solution

To break down barriers, we will recruit and train Community Health Workers within remote communities to counsel families and dispel myths about modern contraception. We will run mobile outreaches which bring free health and family planning services to the most remote and vulnerable communities, who live far from static clinics. They bring medical staff and supplies and set up temporary tents, serving hundreds of people. We also provide quality home services through 'Backpack' Nurse visits.
