    Situation

One of the biggest issues faced by women in Ethiopia today is the power imbalance between men and women, which exists both in public and private life. Social norms regarding women’s capabilities and role in society are still grounded in traditional ideas of motherhood and household work. Without an independent income, women cannot take control of the decisions affecting their lives and are at a greater risk of domestic violence.

    Solution

When a woman is financially independent, she can make choices and decisions about her life, her whole household benefits and her risk of violence is dramatically reduced. Siiqqee will further establish local women-led cooperatives as a means of providing opportunities for women to increase their income, learn new skills and come together in the face of severe adversity during the recent COVID-19 distruption.
