    Situation

This programme aims to improve literacy skills of 540 children across East Africa and India, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, marginalised groups or those unable to attend school because of COVID-19, through development of a digital Literacy Toolkit. The project will help children to develop key literacy and critical thinking skills, encourage an interest in creative writing and expression, whilst recognising the hard work of participants and celebrating their achievements.

    Solution

Through consultation with experts in the creative industries and education, a Toolkit will be developed with a programme of 10 workshops. It will be produced in English but delivered through examples and considerations of local literature, introducing different methods of creative writing in an accessible and inclusive way. The toolkit will be available in hard copy format and online/low-bandwidth formats. Post workshop participants will enter the renowned Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition.
