Helping children get a good start in life is the best way to give them and Malawi a brighter future. We've been working with 8 community-based childcare centres to transform education for children aged 2-6 years but there's more we can do. Help us build on that work and reach more children in 2021.

    Situation

90% of brain development takes place before a child's 5th birthday so it is vitally important that children receive good nutrition, stimulation, health care and education when they are very young. In rural Malawi, this is a challenge as many households live in poverty, dependent on subsistence farming. Community-based childcare centres aim to provide this start for children but are run by untrained volunteers and dependent on donations of porridge to feed the children a vital daily meal.

    Solution

In 2019-20, we trained 26 volunteers from 8 community-based childcare centres in early childhood development. One year later, we can see the difference that this has started to make for children in those centres. We want to extend this training to more volunteers and parents in these centres so that more children can benefit from better health, nutrition and education, building firm foundations so that communities can continue to sustainably run these centres by themselves in future.
