We want to revolutionise cancer early detection, as detecting cancer earlier means it’s more likely to be treated successfully, giving patients the best chance of survival. We have launched the International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) to drive much needed progress in this area.

    Situation

The potential of early detection to improve and save lives is huge. When bowel cancer is diagnosed at the earliest stage, more than 90% of people survive their disease for at least five years, while at the latest stage this drops to 10%. However, early detection is a field that has been held back by a lack of funding and collaboration and we want to change this. ACED's goal is to convene global excellence to develop new strategies and technologies to improve patient survival and quality of life.

    Solution

Cancer is a global challenge that won’t be beaten alone, so collaboration is at the heart of ACED. Initially, we have connected three UK centres with scientists at Stanford University and the Knight Cancer Institute in the US. Together, they will translate research into new ways to fast-track cancer diagnosis and radically improve outcomes for people with the disease. By funding groundbreaking projects, skill development, and infrastructure, ACED will transform early detection research.
