For many, Christmas is the most wonderful time of year but for people living with an abusive partner, it is a dangerous time. Their dogs can be a barrier to them leaving. Your help will get humans and dogs to safety over the festive period and help them start their journey to a new life.

    Situation

Every week, 2 women are killed by a current or former partner in the UK. Owning a dog can prevent people from leaving an abusive relationship. Most refuges for families fleeing abuse cannot accept pets and many owners are too afraid of what might happen to their dog if left behind. So they stay, risking their own wellbeing to protect their beloved dog. A second lockdown and the festive period will be a very fearful time for people and dogs living with an abuser. With your help they can be safe.

    Solution

The Dogs Trust Freedom Project removes this barrier by finding a safe foster home for dogs so their owner can flee - often with their children. We pay for all the costs of care for the dog being fostered, then reunite the dog with their owner when they are ready (typically 7 months later)-so they can begin a new life together. Since 2004,we've helped over 1,500 dogs and their families to find their freedom. The Christmas Challenge will offer more families a critical lifeline this Christmas.
