We will give nature-based activity packs to 12 primary schools. The packs are part of our community wildlife project, Naturehood. They include everything that teachers need to help children connect with nature and to create a wildlife haven within their school, even if it’s in a city centre!

    Situation

Naturehood addresses two big issues in the UK: wildlife loss and the lack of time children spend in nature. Over half our monitored species have declined since 1970. This is partly because most urban areas are not very wildlife friendly: concrete is replacing the habitats our most-loved species need to survive. This increasing urbanisation also means that kids are less connected with nature than ever before. Many children spend only 16 minutes a day outside, despite the mental health benefits.

    Solution

Naturehood connects teachers, children and their neighbours with the nature on their doorstep, supporting them to take positive action for local wildlife. This project has impressive benefits for both people and the environment. Children learn practical scientific skills, make new friends and improve their well-being through spending time outside. Meanwhile, Naturehood helps wildlife to thrive as habitats are enriched.
