In rural India, girls, as young as 8, miss out on an education and end up spending 1/3 of their lives fetching water. Walking for miles every day, carrying loaded water pots weighing 12kg or more on their heads. We can help by providing year-round drinking water at home.

    Situation

A life without water or sanitation means no choice, no education, no future. In rural areas, women and girls are open to abuse as they fetch water. They also face risk as, without proper sanitation, they have no choice but practise open defecation. Waiting until cover of darkness causes health problems, and leaves them vulnerable to snake bites, injury and sexual abuse. Lack of knowledge, facilities, and a culture of shame results in poor personal hygiene.

    Solution

There is a simple solution to this - rainwater harvesting tanks. These structures catch the monsoon rains and store them for use over the year. Clean drinking water at home leads to better health and enables girls to go to school.
