At the Sumatran Orangutan Society, we believe Sumatra's orangutans should be able to thrive, not just survive. We want them to be able to live in flourishing rainforests without the threat of habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, or the illegal pet trade. You can help us make this happen.

    Situation

The relentless destruction of Sumatra’s rainforests has pushed the Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutans to the edge of extinction. With fewer than 14,000 Sumatran orangutans and 800 Tapanuli orangutans remaining in the wild, these species are both classified as Critically Endangered. In fact, the Tapanuli orangutan is the most endangered great ape in the world. As well as being the greatest threat facing orangutans, deforestation harms people’s lives and livelihoods in Sumatra and around the world.

    Solution

Deforestation is the biggest threat facing orangutans, so protecting and restoring their habitat is crucial for their survival. We will use our Big Give campaign funding to enable the people living next to orangutan habitat to protect the existing forest and to regrow orangutan habitat where forest has already been lost. We will also use funding to assist Sumatran NGOs with legal and campaign work to protect threatened habitats.
