Encouraging natural behaviours and providing mental stimulation are essential to the rehabilitation and long-term care of the 280 rescued gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys in our forest sanctuary. We are therefore raising funds to help us continue to give our primates various forms of enrichment.

Situation
The orphaned apes and monkeys at Ape Action Africa were rescued from the illegal bushmeat and pet trades. Infants arrive traumatised by the loss of their families and may have suffered injury, abuse, confinement and social isolation. Providing an environment that is as natural and appropriately stimulating as possible is vital for their successful recovery and their subsequent well-being. This requires daily effort from our team as well as significant funding.
Solution
To maintain the best standards of animal welfare, we keep our highly intelligent primates healthy and happy by encouraging natural behaviours that promote physical and mental well-being. In other words, we provide different forms of enrichment. These can include the use of edible enrichment, the maintenance of appropriate habitats, the provision of mental stimulation, and the management of social relationships between individual primates.
