Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and research is woefully underfunded. We are the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally and through our ambitious research strategy we are poised to take a revolutionary approach to this challenge.

    Situation

Every day 32 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour. Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by over 25 years on average, the highest of any cancer. One of the challenges is that current treatments – surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy – have essentially come from treatments for other cancers which, when applied in the brain, can be damaging and have devastating side effects. We must improve our understanding of these tumours and develop better, more targeted and kinder treatments.

    Solution

The Charity’s new research funding will increase our understanding of the underlying biology of brain tumours and catalyse the translation of those discoveries made in the lab into new and effective treatments. Brain tumours must be diagnosed faster and more accurately so that patients benefit from rapid access to the best possible treatment for their specific type of tumour. A key focus will be improving care and quality of life for all those affected – including carers, family and loved ones.
