    Situation

In 2019 78% of South Africa children aged 9 years could not read for meaning. The majority of primary schools in South Africa are severely under resourced with only two or three books shared between an entire classroom. Few children from poor township communities have books at home. We have created a volunteer reading programme in township schools to address this. Lack of school attendance and IT facilities at home during the Covid-19 crisis will have added to the literacy crisis.

    Solution

help2read's central programme delivers high quality, one to one reading support in schools. We respond to a schools's request to match a trained volunteer or Literacy Tutor with children who are struggling and provide weekly, one to one sessions. help2read ensures that colourful, appropriate books are available for these sessions which create a stimulating environment to enable children to learn to read, comprehend what they are reading and use their reading skills as tools to learn.
