Our tall ship Tenacious was built so that both disabled and non-disabled people can sail as crew, not passengers. Our mission focuses on ability, integration, and breaking down social barriers and misconceptions. We sail with a Medical Purser to provide support to crew with complex needs.

Situation
In the UK 4 in 5 disabled people want to be more active, but psychological barriers prevent them from doing so. In addition, 2 in 3 people feel uncomfortable talking to a disabled person, 1 in 4 people will experience mental health problems in any given year, and over 9 million adults are lonely. Our voyages break down personal and societal barriers as we work towards an inclusive world. However because some of our beneficiaries may have complex health problems, we need to provide medical care.
Solution
We focus on ability not disability. Our ship’s features enable a visually impaired person to steer the ship and a wheelchair user to go up the mast. We pair people of contrasting backgrounds/abilities together to promote equality and diversity, which our beneficiaries can apply to their home, work and social lives after their voyage. By sailing with a Medical Purser we instil confidence in beneficiaries with medical or complex needs that there will be someone who can help them if they need it.
