This campaign has now closed

We must employ a specialist contractor to do "horn grinding" on our locomotive before we can re-wheel and progress the restoration project. Our volunteers will learn about the process and investigate the feasibility of acquiring our own machinery and developing the skills to do this work ourselves.

    Situation

The heritage sector relies on a small number of people with specialist knowledge in traditions that are no longer main-stream - many of an older generation. It is essential for the health and survival of course the sector that the vital skills and knowledge are preserved and passed on to a new generation. Heritage railways depend on skilled volunteers to operate their living museums and provide the enjoyable experience that teaches industrial heritage. The pool of such volunteers is restricted.

    Solution

Using the restoration of a 1918 built steam loco, we are providing training to new volunteers and developmental opportunities to the more experienced. Sub projects include workshops on the basics, mentoring and self development through more advanced/complex work. We aim to provide a supportive environment and an enjoyable experience for all, encouraging involvement by those new to engineering and the younger generation in particular with a better gender mix than the sector currently enjoys.
