    Situation

ME Research UK is dedicated solely to fund biomedical research projects into the causes, consequences and treatment of ME/CFS. Around 240,000 people in the UK have ME/CFS, and women are twice as likely to be affected as men. It affects all social groups and all ages, including children. Most patients are unable to work full-time, and up to a quarter of patients are housebound or bedbound yet research is lacking and underfunded.

    Solution

Since 2000, we have awarded grants of almost £1.7m to universities in the UK and overseas for 52 specific scientific studies. Our priority is to support innovative clinical and biomedical studies based in established research institutions and proposals must demonstrate relevance, originality and excellence. The results of research are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals to enrich the knowledge-base in this under-researched illness.
