Reach is a week where I get to talk to other people just like me and I get to realise that I'm not the only one like this and there are others just like me. It is also a week for me to push myself and try new things. It is a week I look forward to basically all year round and it is amazing to be a p
The best part of the week was the people I was with since we were constantly laughing and everyone was so nice and kind. It was great to have conversations with people that have a little hand as well because you don't get to talk about disabilities with anyone else ever.
You can’t really put a price on this event. My son gets filled with confidence. He is comfortable, he tries new things. The benefits last throughout the year. He puts the photos on his notice board in his room. He carries his Reach water bottle.
I will forever be thankful to Reach for the amazing friends my son has made and the incredible opportunities it has provided him.
We want to build the self confidence of children with upper limb differences, to realise their own abilities and take this belief into all areas of their life. We want to help parents/carers understand that their children can achieve things independently (and show them in a safe environment), we want to build the leadership skills of young adults with upper limb differences and enable them to understand how inspirational they can be as role models.
This week will take children out of their comfort zone both physically and mentally, but also support them in understanding that they can achieve anything they put their mind to. By enabling parents/carers to let children be independent of them for a week (but in a safe environment) allows them to appreciate their abilities and encourage them to let their children try new things independently when they return home. Young adults will have mentor training to help them with leadership skills.
