Music for Autism works to enhance the wellbeing of young people with autism through inclusive and interactive concerts. We introduce young people to professionally performed classical music in an informal environment, where differences are celebrated. The children are encouraged to take part.

    Situation

According to the National Autistic Society there are approximately 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK. Children with autism often have an intense natural musicality. For many children Music for Autism concerts provide a rare opportunity to experience live music, to meet musicians and see instruments being played. Traditional concert settings are often not accessible for these young people and SEND schools do not have the resources to offer live performances on a regular basis

    Solution

In partnership with Music for Autism, OSJ orchestra members perform for hundreds of people who live with autism spectrum disorders, learning difficulties and dementia in care homes, schools and in public spaces throughout Oxfordshire. At these informal performances attendees are encouraged to respond in whatever way they choose including moving, singing, clapping, dancing and even conducting Music-making has been shown to support good mental health and bridge cultural barriers.
