Covid-19 has dramatically accelerated a debt crisis that was spreading across poor countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. 64 poor countries were spending more on debt payments than on healthcare just before the outbreak of the pandemic. Covid-19 has unleashed a series of major economy shocks which have pushed many countries deeper into debt crisis. All at a time when they need to be investing every penny they have in healthcare and social protection to tackle and recover from the pandemic

We are campaigning to secure breathing space from runaway debts for poor countries facing Covid-19. We have already made important progress in 2020, with some debt suspension for the poorest countries. But we need to go much further. Poor countries need debt cancellation to bring their debts back down to manageable, sustainable levels. Working side by side with campaigners from countries in crisis, we will campaign for international action to tackle the Covid-19 debt crisis.
