No child should face mental health problems alone. We are in unprecedented times, but by intervening early by providing support in schools, we can change children’s lives and prevent childhood mental health problems (and the crisis of the coronavirus pandemic) from growing up with the child.

    Situation

Sadly, Place2Be anticipates children's mental health worsening over the coming period due to the upheaval in their lives and disruption to their routine – lack of face-to-face contact with friends and family, witnessing domestic abuse, exam cancellations, worries over their health and that of their families’ and possible bereavement are some of the issues that we expect to see, as well as an increase in safeguarding issues. All these factors can have an impact on children’s emotional wellbeing.

    Solution

We have had to transform how we deliver our core service. For young people and the parents of children who were receiving one-to-one counselling before school closures, our staff are calling every week at the same time as their previous sessions. Since lockdown began our mental health professionals have worked tirelessly and undertaken over 5,045 phone consultations with young people (2,814 in London) and over 13,883 sessions with parents of UK primary school children (5,427 in London).
