You can give children who've spent months confined to homes where they feel afraid or lonely, have shouldered the overbearing weight of caring for loved ones or gone to bed night after night with achey, rumbling tummies a chance to escape their worries and pressures by going on a CHICKS break

    Situation

Ordinarily, many vulnerable children have limited access to nutritious food over the school holidays, a situation that has worsened during the COVID-19 outbreak. The Childhood Trust previously reported that one eight-year-old boy chewed and ate toilet paper over the summer holidays to stave off the hunger, saying “it makes my tummy pain go away”. Many children in London have also lacked access to food, school, friends and haven't had opportunities to be active or even play outside for months.

    Solution

We will provide free respite breaks for vulnerable children whose situations have worsened as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak at our retreats. On their break, the children will have access to nutritious balanced meals and snacks as well as fun outdoor activities in the countryside, such as walks in the Peak District, rock climbing and horse riding. Most importantly, they will get to experience what so many other children may have taken for granted – the chance to feel loved, hopeful and happy.
