This project will deliver a community-based outreach service for active and retired fishermen and their families in Grimsby in the period 1 November 2019 – 31 October 2020. An approximate 50 mile coastline ‘patch’ is covered, with the focus on supporting people with a wide range of welfare issues.

    Situation

Although Grimsby hosts a food packaging industry, 90% of this is imported and most of its fishing fleet consists of vessels 10 metres or under and owned by their Skippers. These smaller operators only have around 4% of the UK’s fishing quota and their annual income is modest and often erratic. Financially fragile, they also tend to have health issues. The project also supports a significant community of retired fishermen and widows who struggle with finances, health and social isolation.

    Solution

The project is based in the heart of the Grimsby fishing community and is comprised of an experienced full-time Outreach Manager, supported by a full-time Outreach Officer, a part time Administrative Assistant and a volunteer support group called The Friends of the Grimsby Fishermen’s Mission. The primary focus is on retired fishermen and widows. The two outreach staff are experienced Caseworkers and have been trained in issues such as Mental Health, Bereavement and Crisis Intervention.
