In 2020, The Bike Project wants to donate an additional 200 bikes to refugees and asylum seekers in the West Midlands. A bikes means a refugee can access essential services and opportunities, feel more engaged and part of their community, and experience improved mental and physical health.

    Situation

The Bike Project tackles the problem of lack of mobility among refugees and the impact it has on their daily lives. Whilst their claim for asylum is being processed, refugees and asylum seekers are not allowed to work and instead receive an allowance of just £38 per week. With a weekly bus pass costing around £20, many refugees cannot afford to access essential services such as legal and medical assistance, Home Office appointments, or psychological support and are at risk of social isolation.

    Solution

The Bike Project solution is simple but effective: • We collect unwanted and abandoned bikes from the police, local councils, companies, and individuals • Professional mechanics working alongside volunteers, including many refugees and asylum seekers, refurbish the bikes. • We donate the bikes to refugees who find us through our network of charity partners • Refugees, having received a bike, save on average £20 a week; can access essential services, and report being healthier and happier
