    Situation

Children and mentally vulnerable adults (e.g. learning disabilities, mental illnesses, autism, brain injuries) are particularly at risk. They can have difficulty understanding what is happening and what their rights are. They are at risk of providing unintentionally unreliable information, even confessing to things they have not done. Appropriate adults (AA) address these risks. But not all vulnerable suspects get an AA - and they are of variable quality.

    Solution

We we address these issues by: - Raising awareness of the problems with government, police and the public - Setting national standards for AA schemes - Developing guidance for local commissioners, schemes and AAs - Supporting AA volunteering by the public - Informing parents and carers about the AA role - Providing training and the means for local areas to improve their own training - Conducting research to better understand the issues - Influencing policy and the law
