The classrooms at Chigumukire community day secondary school in Malawi sustained severe damage as a result of Cyclone Idai in March 2019, and they are no longer safe for young people to use so classes are currently held outside. Funding will support the construction of a new classroom block.

    Situation

Since Cyclone Idai, students attending Chigumukire day secondary school have not been able to use one of the classroom blocks as the roof and walls were damaged beyond repair. Lessons are currently held outside for Form 1 and 2 students but this is not a long-term solution, particularly during the rainy season. During bad weather, lessons have to be cancelled which is affecting students learning. Teaching outside also makes difficult to deliver the curriculum.

    Solution

Joshua will work with the school and parent-teacher association to build a purpose built high-quality classroom block. Using the principle 'Building better back', the design of the building will help it withstand future periods of rain and bad weather, as well as providing a conducive, well-lit and ventilated classroom for learning.
