Situation
FareShare Sussex addresses the problems of food waste and poverty. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation report that overall, 14.3 million people live in poverty in the UK – over one in five of the population. At the same time, 1.9 million tonnes of food is wasted every year in the UK food and drink supply chain. Sussex suffers pockets of deprivation, with Brighton & Hove and Hastings having levels of overall deprivation above the national average.
Solution
We redistribute good food that would otherwise go to waste to frontline charities and community groups that support vulnerable people. By ensuring good food is not wasted we turn an environmental problem into a social solution. We also provide work experience and training opportunities to vulnerable adults in a safe and secure environment through our volunteer programme.
