Many of our clients are under-nourished and the food from FareShare has become all they will eat throughout the week. We have seen a huge amount of growth from clients as a direct result of receiving food from FareShare that enables us to engage with clients that are extremely isolated.
FareShare enables us to provide monthly meals for the homeless and keep our costs down. It also allows us to know we are reducing food waste, and providing shared meals and friendship to the homeless.
FareShare Sussex addresses the problems of food waste and poverty. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation report that overall, 14.3 million people live in poverty in the UK – over one in five of the population. At the same time, 1.9 million tonnes of food is wasted every year in the UK food and drink supply chain. Sussex suffers pockets of deprivation, with Brighton & Hove and Hastings having levels of overall deprivation above the national average.
We redistribute good food that would otherwise go to waste to frontline charities and community groups that support vulnerable people. By ensuring good food is not wasted we turn an environmental problem into a social solution. We also provide work experience and training opportunities to vulnerable adults in a safe and secure environment through our volunteer programme.
