    Situation

Many children and young-people require intensive support as they transition from primary to secondary school, so they can overcome disadvantage and fulfil their potential. Failure to support them at this critical time results in difficulties adjusting to secondary school, leading to lower grades, poor attendance, increased anxiety and disruptive behaviour. In North-East Edinburgh, 1 in 4 children and young people live in poverty, which is a further barrier to them achieving their potential.

    Solution

Since 2015 we have worked in partnership with schools to identify children and young-people aged 10-14 who require support and who are: disengaging from school; below average attainment levels, displaying low self-esteem; having difficulty maintaining positive relationships; and/or displaying symptoms of trauma/distress. Our service comprises 1) Befriending; 2) Art Therapy; 3) Art Befriending; 4) Family Support and 5) Group Activities such as Science Club, Inside Out Club and Outdoor Journeys.
