    Situation

Many women in the communities we work in are extremely disadvantaged, dependent on the men of the community, and with little control over their situation. They face systemic discrimination, and being vulnerable to becoming trapped in unsupportive or abusive relationships. They have fewer legal rights than men, causing dependence and isolation. Education is a key route to empowerment of women, enabling them to act independently, and sometimes escape reliance upon abusive or unsupportive men.

    Solution

Our Functional Adult Literacy program provides first-time access to literacy skills for women in developing communities across Uganda and beyond. As their literacy develops, so the women are supported in developing projects to enable their own economic empowerment: through agricultural projects, income generating activities, and projects to protect and store local water sources.
