Hamlin Fistula UK is dedicated to restoring the health and dignity of women in Ethiopia who have survived the horrendous - and preventable - childbirth injury obstetric fistula. Fistula can be repaired with a single life changing surgery – in 2019/20 we will reach and treat women in Sidama Zone.

Situation
For a population of over 114 million, Ethiopia has less than 325 obstetricians and 7,000 midwives. Over 80% of Ethiopia’s population lives in remote rural areas with little or no access to maternal healthcare and over 70% of women give birth without a doctor or nurse present. This lack of health services has a devastating impact - approximately 11,000 women and girls die during childbirth or as a result of complications each year, and an estimated 1,500 survive but with an obstetric fistula.
Solution
Hamlin Ethiopia operates five regional Fistula Hospitals in provinces where health services are very limited. Yirgalem Regional Fistula Hospital in Sidama Zone, Southern Region, is providing vital services to women living in remote rural communities to prevent and treat childbirth injuries. In 2019/20 the hospital will provide surgeries to over 400 women including fistula, pelvic organ prolapse, caesarean section for past fistula patients and minor procedures including cystoscopy.
