    Situation

One of the life-threatening challenges facing people in Cambodia living with HIV - who aren't on a regular ARV regimen - is a compromised immune system that makes them susceptible to developjng cryptococcyl meningitis. This is an opportunistic fungal infection that left untreated is fatal, but can be effectively treated with an antifungal medication called Amphotericin B. This drug is not available free of charge to patients in Cambodia, making it a death sentence to those who can't afford it.

    Solution

AidsArk have initiated a project to provide Amphotericin B medication to the primary HIV hospital in Phnom Penh - the Roussey hospital - which treats many of the patients with cryptococcyl meningitis. So when a patient is diagnosed with this infection they have the medication readily available, so this life saving treatment can happen even if the patient is not in a position to pay for it.
