We will reduce stress & enhance future wellbeing for patients & carers by bringing more support to their lives, both in the hospice and at home. This will be facilitated by extending our befriending service, allowing for person-centred practical & emotional support throughout the hospice journey.

    Situation

A natural inclination to panic in unfamiliar, frightening circumstances can lead to unnecessary hospital & care home admissions if the carer feels they cannot cope. This not only puts pressure on our already limited healthcare resources, but brings associated stress & anxiety for patients and carers alike. Moreover, research undertaken in 2018 has identified that carers feel they need more support with their own health as a result of caring, both physically and mentally.

    Solution

Facing the imminent death of a loved one is a new and scary experience for many, so having a befriender there as a familiar face to offer help and practical support at home will alleviate some of their anxiety. This additional support will enhance the carer’s wellbeing and confidence, allowing them to cope better and be better care givers. This will, in turn, lessen their reliance on other healthcare services as their loved one will be able to stay at home for longer, if this is their wish.
