Botanic Gardens have long been centres of excellence for plant conservation and many are experts in sustainable practices. This project aims to support smaller botanic gardens that don't have the expertise or infrastructure required to adopt sustainable practices in saving water, energy, and food.

    Situation

In a survey of more than 200 botanic gardens across the world, 53% indicated that sustainable measures were in place at their institutes. Botanic gardens have a responsibility to practice what they preach, and if care for the environment is one of the key messages to the general public, then demonstrating environmentally sustainable practices in the way the organisation is run is essential.

    Solution

Through BGCI's Global Botanic Garden Fund, botanic gardens will be able to apply for grants of £1,000 - £2,500 to support the implementation of sustainability measures. Gardens will be able to apply for grants to implement activities focused on water saving and recycling, energy saving, recycling and composting, sustainable food, urban greening, and the development of sustainability strategies, education initiatives, and outreach.
