We will create 2 new multi-sensory and highly interactive productions for children with complex needs (profound & multiple learning disabilities/ autistic spectrum conditions /deafblind) touring for 21 weeks to 6000 people across the UK. Young people will have greater agency as co-creators.

Situation
Young people with complex needs are disproportionately affected by poor mental health, and largely overlooked as audiences. Even ‘relaxed’ performances are not appropriate for those with the most severe disabilities. Last year 55% of our young disabled audiences enjoyed theatre for the first time. These young people otherwise miss out on cultural experiences that increase wellbeing and reduce isolation, and families miss out on vital shared experiences for disabled and non-disabled siblings.

Oily Cart has created high-quality, multi-sensory theatre for children with complex needs for 35+ years. Every performance is tailored to each child’s specific needs, using ALL the senses. Touch, smell, movement and vibration are as integral to our shows as live music and immersive scenery. Actors are trained in intensive interaction to give each child the best possible experience. Our shows inspire families and schools using non-verbal communication tools and give vital fun shared experiences.
