Gabrieli Roar is an ambitious choral training programme in which the professional musicians of Gabrieli train and rehearse, perform and record side-by-side with British teenagers. Our project will be a 5 day residential course and performance for 250 young singers from 12 youth choirs in July 2020.

    Situation

Arts education in the UK is in crisis. Under pressure to improve outcomes in reading, writing and maths, the arts are being sidelined in the curriculum, so that only those children with families able to facilitate and finance after-school activities benefit from any level of artistic engagement. Where grassroots participatory music-making opportunities do exist, progression routes are limited. Since 2010, the number of entrants for music GCSE in England has fallen by 22% (Ofqual, June 2018).

    Solution

Gabrieli Roar works exclusively with state school children by forming partnerships with youth and school choirs across the UK. We focus particularly on regions with limited cultural engagement. Our residential courses offer excellent choral training, the opportunity to sing alongside professional singers and perform with a full-scale symphony orchestra. In 2020 participants will perform Elgar’s monumental oratorio The Dream of Gerontius, a work far beyond the scope of any normal youth choir.
