AFRIL is fundraising for its Food Bank which supports vulnerable refugees and people seeking asylum. Delivered in partnership with St Peter's Church, Lee, the Helping Hands Food Bank helps 20 people and their families per week with food parcels, creative activities, advice, and a space to socialise.

Situation
AFRIL’s Food Bank helps refugees, asylum-seekers and vulnerable migrants. Our beneficiaries face a variety of obstacles to leading a healthy mental and physical life. Many of these difficulties relate to their immigration status in the UK: most have little or no income, due to a No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) status, or, as asylum-seekers, an inability to work until their case has been resolved. Our beneficiaries cannot afford to buy essentials like food, toiletries, and nappies.
Solution
The Helping Hands Food Bank addresses food insecurity first and foremost, but the project is way more than just a weekly source of food for refugees. We offer beneficiaries the opportunity to take part in creative activities such as sewing and painting, to practice English with friendly volunteers, to access specialist advice, and - importantly - to socialise with others and their families. In this way, the Food Bank creates a basis to tackle some complex issues such as social isolation.
