Classics for All is a small national charity founded in 2009 to reverse the decline in classics teaching in state schools across the UK. In response to continuing demand, we seek funding to increase our footprint in areas of socio-economic deprivation.

    Situation

The status of classics in state schools is particularly fragile: in 2010, classical subjects were taught in only a quarter of UK state schools compared with 75% of independent schools. Restoring classics to state schools is a challenge. Barriers include a shortage of qualified teachers, a crowded and competitive curriculum and the enduring myth that the study of classics is only for a privileged few. Classics is particularly scarce in schools in areas of socio-economic deprivation.

    Solution

Classics for All aims to enrich the lives and raise aspirations of young people through the study of classics and to train non-specialist teachers to engage with the classical world. Since 2010, over 800 schools in England, Scotland and Wales have introduced/developed classical subjects with our support, inspiring over 45,000 pupils to explore the ancient world. Over 50% of schools we support have above national average numbers of pupils eligible for Free School Meals and Pupil Premium funding.
