We will provide community support hubs for those affected by ovarian cancer across the West Midlands, working with 150 people a month. Our new local Support manager will provide support for those diagnosed, and their family. We will also raise awareness of the disease among marginalised groups.

    Situation

Ovarian Cancer is diagnosed in 1 in 52 women in the UK. As the symptoms are often misdiagnosed it is often diagnosed late, survival rates are low. Early identification and awareness raising is crucial; there is no national screening program. The West Midlands has a diverse population that is less well represented in our membership. Ovarian cancer occurs at a younger age in BAME women and the proportion of aggressive cancer is higher. Cultural barriers can limit uptake of cancer genetic testing.

    Solution

Establish and develop culturally sensitive face-to-face support groups. Ensure women have access to information about genetic testing and how it can help in risk prediction and treatment planning. Address barriers which limit the uptake of support. Raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer across the region, leading to earlier diagnosis. Work with local organisations to provide factually accurate, timely support and information is given to those affected by the disease.
