Situation
Every year in the United Kingdom alone, there are approximately 300,000 burn and scald injuries with over 100,000 of them requiring hsopital treatment. Many patients with severe burns die, but some do recover. Scars are a major problem in survivors. Scars are tough and tighten the skin, causing provlems with movement and pain. Some patients become distressed at the appearance of their scars which leads to mental health problems. If we could improve the way we treat these wounds, then there would be less scarring, less pain, better movement and a better mental outlook for patients. We can now take a piece of healthy skin from a patient and grow millions of cells from it. These can be applied to their wounds to boost healing. We are developing new wyas of growing cells on novel materials designed to helpwounds heal. this work will lead to improvements in healing in burns patients. Our published results mean that patients all over the world can benefit from our research.
