Oral infections and toothaches when left untreated have an awful effect on people's live. In rural areas of Malawi there is no access to any form of dentistry. We train village based health workers in emergency dentistry to get their communities out of pain and out of danger.

    Situation

Imagine having a toothache for months or years - imagine the pain and infection getting worse, even to the point of being life threatening. Malawi has less than 30 dentists for its population of 18 million citizens, most in private practice. In rural areas there is often no access to any form of dental treatment. This means that people are in so much pain that they struggle to work or sleep. It means that vulnerable communities of subsistence farmers are made even more vulnerable.

    Solution

Bridge2Aid has trained over 550 rural health workers in Tanzania to help their communities out of pain and out of danger. We are now aiming to bring this Emergency Dental Training model to Malawi. Volunteer dentists from the UK will deliver intensive practical training so that tooth extractions and oral education will be available to remote villages. We'll be giving skills to local people, providing a sustainable and long-term solution. Our model is based on the WHO Oral Urgent Treatment model
