Oxfam is well-known for working in Ethiopia in emergency situations, but we also work with communities, helping them to work their way out of poverty in the long-term. This project is an example of this approach and is part of a 3-year initiative.

    Situation

Half of Ethiopia's population live below the poverty line. In addition, about 85 per cent of the population in Ethiopia live in rural areas, dependent on subsistence agriculture and are therefore very vulnerable to climatic and other fluctuations. Furthermore, when they do have any surplus produce, they have little power in the markets and do not realise the full value of their produce.

    Solution

In this example, Oxfam is working with Zembaba, a honey-producing co-operative. The beekeepers (mostly women - traditionally under-represented in this area) will be helped to modernise their production, improve the quality of their produce and to market
